Art Specs

CHECKLIST

If you are providing digital art to KABA for a project, please provide this list to your
graphic designer as our basic art requirements.

  • Supported Media

Files may be supplied on CD-R, 100/150 MB Zip disk, via the internet, uploaded on the KABA FTP site. Please include a printout of the disk contents and indicate which specific files to output.

  • Supported Applications

Macintosh®: QuarkXPress™, Illustrator® (EPS), Photoshop®, PageMaker®, InDesign™ and FreeHand® (EPS).

PC: QuarkXPress™ and Illustrator® (EPS).

  • Art Shape &
    Size

Design using KABA Templates. They are 100% to scale (1:1).

  • Page/Paper
    Sizes

Keep standard page/paper sizes set at 8.5" x 11", 11" x17" or 18" x 24". (Do not resize KABA templates.)

  • Bleed

Create a 1/8" (0.125") bleed over every paper trim mark (cutting edge) to ensure that when the printed paper is trimmed during the finishing process, the ink coverage extends to the edge of the paper.
Note: do not put a bleed on art printing to the face of the CD or cassette.

  • Support Files
    (TIF or EPS links)

All "art files" used in the page layout (and "linked" to it) should be sent with the job and should be saved either as TIF or EPS. Do not "embed" images in the page layout but "link" them.

  • Color Prints
    and Samples

One hard copy (such as a laser print) should be output at 100% size and supplied with your disks/digital art. Mark the name and date of the file. Mark any spot colors on the copy (if you have any). Send color samples or a Pantone® number for matching (if applicable).

  • Specify Colors

Process colors or spot colors should be chosen from a swatch book rather than by viewing the computer monitor. Do not trust your computer monitor for ink colors. Pantone makes a swatch book for specifying both process color and spot inks.

  • Color Systems

All imported color art (such as Photoshop files) should be saved as CMYK process colors, or grayscale or duotone. DO NOT use RGB or Index Color. Additionally, if you are using any spot colors they should be set up correctly as spot colors in the files (stick with naming Pantone numbers).

  • Photo & Art Resolutions

Scan photos and create bitmap art at 300 dpi or more,
100% to final scale. Bitmaps should be created at a dpi appropriate for the line screen in which they are to be output. (We recommend designing at slightly higher resolutions for later uses). 300 dpi is a standard for our printing, which is roughly equal to 150 line screen. 600 dpi is a minimum for bitmaps with a very hard edge (that is, text blocks and scanned line art).

  • Fonts
  • Send all fonts used in your files, including those used in all the linked art. This assures that all typefaces in the documents will output correctly, and that text will flow as you have specified.

  • We support Postscript fonts. For Mac fonts, please include the Suitcase. Include both printer and screen fonts. Tip: If you cannot use a standard font, and/or need to save time with many fonts, you can convert fonts to "outline art" with Adobe Illustrator or to bitmap with Photoshop. Disclaimer: Always save a version with type still "in" the art before you outline; Outlining strips fonts from the job and does not allow anyone to correct typos or update it later.
    • Preparing Art for Transmittal and Film Output

Please place the final document file itself into a folder labeled "Design." This folder should contain only the final version of your document, which should match your supplied hard copy of the file. Please put all other inserted or imported elements in that final document into another folder labeled "Images." Please place all fonts used in the document, or any of its placed elements, into another folder labeled "Fonts". If you plan to transmit fonts over the internet, use StuffIt™ to compress each font folder separately, otherwise fonts can get corrupted.

If you have more questions about the basic requirements, please see the FAQ or Glossary sections for assistance.
